Moderation is the key to healthy snacking. Even “healthy” foods can contain excessive fat, sugar, and calories if not eaten in controlled portions as part of a well-balanced diet. Smart snackers recognize the importance of knowing what they are snacking on – they pay attention to portion size and nutrition facts.
The nutrition facts of some popular healthy snacks might surprise you:
Granola Bars contain beneficial nuts and whole grains, but are often loaded with sugar. A Nature Valley Chewy Trail Mix Fruit & Nut Bar contains more sugar than a bowl of Lucky Charms – 14 grams as opposed to 11 grams. Before eating a granola bar, check the sugar content and consider a lower-sugar alternative such as a handful of plain nuts or trail mix.
Dried Fruit is filled with natural nutrients and makes a great healthy snack, but it shouldn’t be treated as a direct substitute for fresh fruit. Ounce-for-ounce, dried fruit contains considerably more calories and sugar than raw fruit. ¼ cup of raisins contains 130 calories and 29 grams of sugar, while ¼ cup of raw grapes contains just 26 calories and 9 grams of sugar.
Vegetable Chips seem like a healthier choice, but many are deep-fried and contain just as much fat as ordinary potato chips. A 1 oz. serving of the average potato chip contains 10 grams of fat.
